Dear Tom, Arrival will probably win a boat-load of awards.

Blech. Blech. A thousand times Blech.

You know how after you watch an interesting film you think about it long afterwards? Discuss it maybe?

I couldn’t stop thinking about Arrival because it annoyed the living shite out of me.

For oh-so-many damn reasons.

In order to avoid spoilers I shall force myself not to list said damn reasons.

(Yes, I got it. I got it within the first few scenes. It was not too smart for me. Which reminds me of Lucifer’s mother, Charlotte -Tricia Helfer- in the most recent episode, Homewrecker – “Oh. She thinks she’s smart.”)

Blech. Ugh. Blech. (Not Tricia Helfer. I adore her!)

Now I’m flashing on Star Trek IV. Ack! At least Spock- Leonard Nimoy- had his usual deadpan comedic timing in that campy-monstrosity! And he got to wear a watch cap.

That’s about all, good buddy. Peace out.

XOXO! Julia

P.S. The trailer is way better than the film. Someone should have stopped me right there. On the other hand- Bring on Season Two of Stranger Things!!!

Well, Alicia, I’ll say this – It’s derivative. It’s phony. Tries too hard to emote. Excess Deus ex Machina. The basic theme, as expressed by another blogger is this – ‘Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.’ The movie is nothing more than a contorted vehicle for this message. A poor vehicle at that. Tries to fool you into thinking it’s an intelligent film. Mistakes smoke and mirrors and plot devices for intelligence. My husband was confused for two days despite my repeated explanations. Boils down to this–‘Cuz yeah, only two people in the entire world, well, actually one person in the entire world can figure out the squid folk. (Why do aliens always look like squids? How does a squid fly a spaceship?) The second person is pretty useless aside from being a sperm donor.

        There. Was that so hard?

        I actually value your opinion!

You had me at the Deus ex machina part. No-no in my book, especially if you spotted it fairly quickly.

I don’t like movies which make the main effort one of fooling the viewer. Okay, maybe except the Sixth Sense, and maybe Memento.

My husband loves Memento. I found it tiresome. I liked The Sixth Sense but the writers got it wrong. The seeing ghosts thing. Wait for the movie to come out on cable, Alicia. And beware of depression…

I love sci fi, Diana. I did not even like this movie. I’m pretty passionate about the genre. I like all my t’s crossed and my i’s dotted. Arrival missed the mark. Went for drama-queen type trope. Maybe wait for it to come out on cable?

You’re the tie breaker for us, Julia. We were at a dinner party and over desserts the topic fell on YES, GO movies and STAY HOME movies. Seriously, there were equal numbers of those who said to Definitely see it and those who said Don’t bother (and also those of us in the center who hadn’t seen it.
Thanks for the heads up. We get both Starz and HBO, so when it comes out we’ll pop some corn and curl up on the sofa. 😉

Yeah, skip it in the theater, Marylin. Honestly, I wish I had good things to say about the film because I do love science fiction. In this case I’m just saying no.
