Dear Tom, #PrayforParis

I’m so glad you don’t have to see this. You would be horrified and outraged. I am praying for the people of Paris. Julia

The useless violence of it all, Julia, and it’s escalating everywhere. One of the women in my writing workshop I taught two weeks ago had written an article about how not to borrow worries in advance (she’s a therapist, and she used her college-age daughter’s junior year abroad as an example). Her daughter is studying in Paris.
I heard from her tonight, and until she learned her daughter was safe, she said she was in misery. But they still haven’t heard anything from her niece, who was supposed to arrive in Paris today.

I hope both girls are all right. We were in France in September. My youngest stayed at a hotel one night near the concert hall. This is so horrible.

We are all French today. This atrocity boggles the mind. I have yet to totally understand this madness. I try never to discuss politics. However, at least a part of this is the weakness of the current American government.

Roberta, those of us who disagree with our government are afraid to speak out. I was not afraid to speak out when I disagreed with Bush. Now I’m intimidated.
